While building on the traditional techniques of Japan painting, Tadashi Fukumoto is a painter who builds his own screen world by superimposing the lightness of pop art with a somewhat nostalgic retro-American atmosphere. Motifs that touch the heartstrings, such as vegetables, fruits, and toys, are sublimated into modern and stylish images through sophisticated colors and compositions.
While consistently dealing with familiar themes of "clothing, food, housing, and play," the basis of his expression lies the solid technique of Japan painting that he has honed at Tokyo University of the Arts. The support is made of cloud-skin hemp paper, and traditional art materials such as rock paint, ink, and foil are carefully layered with techniques such as "tarashi-in" and "blur". Its unwavering respect for tradition brings a certain style and depth to the light motif expression.
On the other hand, the composition of the picture and the sense of color show a keen sensitivity to modern visual culture. The still lifes of fruits painted in bright colors and the painting style of old toys are reminiscent of American advertising and graphic design in the 1960s, and this exquisite balance between Japan and the West is the true essence of Tadashi Fukumoto.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1996, he has presented at department stores and galleries, and his collection has been exhibited at many restaurants, including the French restaurant "Chez Ino" in Kyobashi, the patisserie "Idemisgino", and the "Entrée" in Funabashi. He also designs designs for design designs such as Idemisgino, patisserie BIOMOMO HASHIMOTO in southern France, and others. In 2018, he also won the Excellence Award at the Japan Sake and Dassai Design Awards. In addition, Teruhisa Kitahara, who is known as a toy collector, was selected for a collection exhibition, and his expression and activities are expanding across genres. He is a painter who lightly connects tradition and modernity and continues to update the possibilities of Japan painting, and will attract more and more attention in the future.
