INTERVIEWInterview

Naoko Inoue

Please tell us how you started drawing and your career choice.

I was exposed to my grandfather's ink paintings and spent my childhood surrounded by a collection of picture books. I like to draw and look at painting, and in high school I was also inclined to oil painting, but I didn't include art options in my career path.

Paradoxically, while listening to the opinions of various people, such as the pros and cons of doing what you love, and that there is no escape if you do what you love, I thought in my childish mind that work is difficult. Painting was important to me, so I decided that it would be better to separate my work as a job. I was the type of person who studied steadily, so I decided to go to a four-year university, study hard, get a job, and draw in my important private time, so I didn't dare to connect it with my work.

Why did you continue to draw even after you became a member of society?

After studying business at the Faculty of Commerce, I got a career track at a manufacturer. It was a few years after the Equal Employment Opportunity Act was enacted, and I lived a fulfilling but quite hard working life. Even in my busy life, I couldn't control my desire to paint, so I went to an oil painting class once a week at a gallery in the Ginza Corridor Street, which was held at the time.

I painted oil paintings and made charcoal drawings. I realized that that kind of time is a very precious time that allows me to forget everything and immerse myself in painting. Forget about everyday stress and floating worlds. When I was concentrating, I couldn't hear anything, and I was free from everything by focusing only on what was in front of me.

I can't help but draw it. The more time I have to draw, the more I feel about painting.

What kind of thoughts do you put into your work?

I want to express the excitement of being alive as it is. When I'm painting, I'm alive myself. I realize. When I spend my time on a daily basis, I don't feel that kind of thing, and the days go by in a hurry. I was moved by seeing beautiful things, and by drawing pictures, I felt like I was alive. I put that feeling into my paintings.

Flowers are amazing. I think. Quiet and silent, but powerful and full of vitality. And he will gently snuggle up to you no matter what you feel. This is true not only for flowers but also for nature as a whole, but the vitality due to the resilience that has evolved over a long period of time. Especially in this corona disaster, I felt once again that the existence of flowers and nature is even more amazing. I am encouraged by the fact that they steadily carve the seasons, that the greenery is steadily sprouting, and that the flowers are blooming and embodying the seasons firmly.

Please tell us about your encounter with transparent watercolors.

Until now, there was an assumption that painting = oil painting. However, oil painting is not the best choice for painting delicate, detailed, and fluid paintings like those found in my grandfather's ink paintings, which can be said to be the origin. With such thoughts in mind, I encountered transparent watercolor paints, which accelerated my life as an artist.

One of the discoveries was that there were such wonderful art materials. I was fascinated by the transparency of transparent watercolor, the color on top while making use of the white of the paper, and the charm of paint that brings both to life by adding color to it. Transparent watercolor moves with water. Rather than drawing, I put color. When a color is placed, it spreads and mixes with the water. I like finished things, but the feeling of playing on paper when I'm drawing is also very attractive. When you want to draw flowers and the atmosphere around them, the goodness of transparent watercolor comes into play.

Personally, I like to express it using granulation paint particles. By mixing heavy and light paints and placing them on the screen, the light paint flows quickly ~ and the heavy paint enjoys the changes on the screen that remain there. If you come to see the actual painting, you will see that there is granulation around here! I think you will enjoy it.

Please tell us about your encounter with flowers.

I went to the flower shop anyway, and this girl... It's a joy to meet a child like that. When I go to a flower shop, I don't decide to buy 〇〇, but go looking for a meeting. I wonder what kind of people are there today. I'm going to go with a little excitement like that. Then it will be wow every time. I wonder if there was such a person.

There is always a flower that catches the eye, and the encounter is completely different depending on the season, and it depends on the timing of the trip, so it is really a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
I'm glad I met you today, please come to my house. So, I will scout one by one, focusing on the child who plays the main role, and I will scout one by one, as if you would like to come to my house, but the process is irresistibly fun, or rather, I am a little excited (laughs).

That's where the painting begins, or rather, it feels like I'm grateful for the encounter and come back with a cherished heart. The finished picture is a single picture, but it starts with going and meeting flowers, scouting, having it cohesive to a certain extent, and then thinking about which vessel to match when you get home. The time spent with flowers is also included in the painting.

Please tell us about the appeal of painting.

I would be happiest if I could continue to draw my impressions and share them with the viewers. I hope you can feel relieved and at ease even a little.

The good thing about the painting is that the viewer can feel the artist's enthusiasm and move their hearts. It was impressive, questionable, and sometimes uncomfortable. I think that is accompanied by the feeling of being alive. I think the great thing about painting is that you can communicate through the screen. Of course, I also love movies and music, and my heart is moved, but while movies and music progress at the pace of the work, paintings can be perceived and enjoyed at the pace of the viewer. I feel that it is a gentle art.

Mr. Inoue has continued to draw while working as a member of society without doing what he loves as a job. His encounter with transparent watercolor paints became a turning point, and he continues to work while being encouraged by the vitality of flowers and the way they embody the seasons. He cherishes once-in-a-lifetime encounters at a flower shop and captures the time spent with flowers in his paintings. Expectations are high for Mr. Inoue's future activities.

The coincidence and blurred expression created by paint and water on the screen are touches that make use of the charm of watercolor painting, and the vitality of flowers and the fresh atmosphere are depicted.
