DING FANGYU
Born in 1996 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.
In 2018, he graduated from the Mural and Mixed Materials Painting Department and Lacquer Art Workshop at Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. That same year, he participated in the lacquer art group exhibition "Walking Lacquer Words" organized by the Haohualin Art District Art District. From 2019 to 2022, at Shanghai Yuemu Culture & Art Co., Ltd., he worked as a senior multi-material painter and art director, involved in commercial art projects, spatial visual management, and material experimentation.
Since 2024, he has been majoring in lacquer craft at Kyoto Traditional Craft College.
Using soft and delicate materials such as wool, fabric, lacquer, metal powder, and natural dyes, he creates works with themes of negative emotions, memories, and the cycle of life. Influenced by Junichiro Tanizaki's 'In Praise of Shadows,' he explores the beauty hidden in shadows rather than strong light, the presence of the invisible.
The work is also an attempt to explore the vitality hidden within the silence and the faint presence left after the light has faded.
