INTERVIEWInterview

Kei Emura

Please briefly introduce yourself.

Growing up looking at the green countryside of the northern Kanto region, I was an active child running around the mountains with my friends, but on the other hand, I was quite sensitive and shy. I took various lessons, but I think it was more fun and comfortable to immerse myself in drawing than to interact with people. I belonged to the sketching club and art club from elementary school to junior high and high school, and was involved in painting, but I had a strong longing for foreign countries and did not go to art school and graduated from the English department.
After working as a member of society, I got married and had a little more children, so I entered a correspondence course at an art school to study painting professionally. It was a special time for me to meet and interact with various people from all over the country who came from all over the country with different ages, occupations, and the world of painting, and not only learned painting, but also experienced the wider society.
I am still working with the teachers and friends I met through group exhibitions and public exhibitions. After graduating from the art department over five years, he began to exhibit at prefectural art exhibitions and public exhibitions, as well as start a group with his friends and hold solo exhibitions at a small gallery in Ginza.
With the support of the art class teacher I attended after I got married, my first solo exhibition, which I held with half-bluffing courage, received a certain amount of praise and became a step towards my next solo exhibition.

What made you start working as a painter?

When I was a teenager, I was fascinated by post-impressionist painters such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin, and looked at art books as if I were a favorite reader. Not only was it fun, but the colors, shapes, and compositions there were also hints for creating images, and the art book was like a textbook, so to speak.
When I visited the hill of Lobe, France, to see the place where Cézanne later confronted the scenery, and saw the scene spread out against the backdrop of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, I felt as if time had stopped.
Through that experience, I was attracted to the idea of painters "painting what I felt", and eventually I wanted to express myself through painting.

Are there any exhibitions or events that have left an impression on you?

Impressive exhibitions include the "Azumino Painting Contest", "Marimba Exhibition Planned by Marimba Players", and the "Kei Emura Painting Exhibition" held in his hometown last year.

The "Azumino Painting Contest" depicts the Doso gods, quasi-national parks, cherry blossoms, and watermills that I saw in Azumino, which I visited several times, on a red screen, and painted them fantatically. The title used a tanka of the god Doso that my mother recited in Azumino, and it became a commemorative picture.
The exhibition "Marimba" was a new style of event in which the musician's teacher created a song based on the paintings of five artists and enjoyed playing along with the pictures projected on the monitor. There was fun in collaborating with the painting, as if your own picture was moving with the image song, and it was also unveiled at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan.

"Kei Emura Painting Exhibition" was held with an offer from a local local art museum. This museum is registered as a national intangible cultural heritage as the residence of a doctor in the Edo period, and in addition to the permanent exhibition, an exhibition of contemporary artists is held once a year. "Your painting is a fantasy" was evaluated. We were able to hold the long-awaited local event in a quiet environment surrounded by gardens and trees, and we came into contact with many people and deepened our attachment to the local area.

In addition, the original art exhibition of the creative picture book "Satoi Mofumiri" published in 2021 is also an unforgettable exhibition. In 2023, it will also be held as an illustration and merchandise sale, and exchanges through English picture books will be created at the café gallery in the downtown area, which is visited by foreign tourists and locals.

What kind of thoughts do you put into your work?

If you think it's interesting or wonderful in the nature around you or on a trip, you want to try drawing it. Flowers and animals are especially essential motifs for me, and the scenery is often used as a background. I often move the arrangement of things on the canvas many times because I assemble and compose what I want to draw, but how I draw is important to me. The subject matter may be anything, but the painting begins with "seeing and feeling" on the spot, so I value sensitivity.

Please tell us if there is a work that you think is the most "like me!" Also, please tell us why you think so.

Among the works I painted, the painting that I think is unique to me is F30 "Poem of Wild Plants". When I was young, I drew this memorable work that won the Excellence Award at a public exhibition, and I wanted to express the presence of wildflowers and insects in the painting, which are small but desperately alive. The influence of Henri Rousseau, whom I have known since I was a teenager, is also strong, and his mysterious and fantastic worldview is still alive in me.

Can you tell us your thoughts on future work?

In the future, I would like to draw vegetables that support my life every day with gratitude. And I would be happy if I could truly feel that drawing time is fun.

Kei Emura lightly moves back and forth between fantasy and reality, depicting the preciousness of life. The works, which are born from many years of experience and a solid eye for observation, sometimes have a sense of depth like a story. Expectations are high for the world of expression, which will deepen in the future.

~The wonder of being there, colors, shapes, and lines~
I want to paint when I feel something that attracts me to the usual casual scenery or scenes I encounter on my travels. Not only the beauty of nature, but also the surprise and excitement when you encounter the life activities of small flowers and insects in the grass are also fresh. It is also interesting to see the lines that follow the various forms of plants, the precise and complex shapes of small insects, and how they change color and shape every day. At first glance, it looks like a small corner, but there is a large amount of nature spreading out there. I wonder why it is there. When I see things and am inspired, I painstakingly fit them into my own colors and compositions. From a big world to a small corner, and vice versa. I want to create works that are fantastic even with everyday motifs as if they were seen from a distance. I want to draw comfortably and happily, but if I continue to draw, will I be able to get to that point? If that's the case, I think I need to draw more.
